What is Latex Foam and from what is made?

Surely you’ve wondered many times from which material is latex mattress composed, It is made from latex foam, a type of foam that is made from natural or other synthetic materials.

There are three main types of latex foam on the market: natural latex, mixed latex and 100% synthetic latex.

Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber tree. Unfortunately, a 100% natural latex foam mattress is very rare, and even if you may find one, the costs are very high. Instead, you will find latex mattress that made from blended latex, which is actually a combination of natural latex and other synthetic materials. Nevertheless, most latex mattresses are made from synthetic materials that imitate natural latex.

Ways of Making Latex Foam

One of the first process in making latex foam is to collect the sap from the rubber tree, that will be eventually processed and transformed into a product that is used in the mattress industry. There are two processes of making latex foam mattresses: the Talalay Process and the Dunlop Process.

  1. Talalay Process

Talalay process consists combining synthetic materials and air that result in a softer feeling foam. Natural Talalay does not exist on the market so for this reason most of it it's blended with synthetic components.

  1. Dunlop Process

Through Dunlop process the latex mattress becomes firmer. Both of these mentioned processes can be 100% synthetic.

Types Of Latex Mattresses

There are three types of latex mattresses in the industry: all latex mattresses, foam over latex mattresses and latex over foam mattresses.

  1. All Latex

All latex mattresses are made entirely from latex, whether it’s mixed, synthetic or 100% natural. They can be composed of one layer or more layers, but the main thing is that it has latex in its structure.

  1. Foam Over Latex

This type of mattress is composed of a memory foam layer over a latex base, which is thicker that the foam layer; usually it has around 2 inches.

  1. Latex Over Foam

As the name would suggest this type is a multiple layered design which has a thinner top layer of latex over a thicker foam base which is usually visco memory foam. These are slightly more available than the above but depending on the thickness of each layer would determine the overall price you pay. They are cheaper than an all-latex mattress, but are still great for joint pain or reducing back problems, and provide good motion isolation.

This type is exactly the opposite of foam over latex type, in the sense that the memory foam base is covered by a thick layer of latex. This type is quite common and it’s cheaper than all latex mattresses.

Other advantages of latex foam mattresses

There are other advantages in purchasing a latex mattress. For instance, a mattress that is made from latex or it contains latex it will not have that chemical odor when its new. Also, it may produce more heat than a traditional spring mattress.

It is also fire retardant and non-toxic. The mattresses sold in the United States must conform to some safety requirements. Most mattresses from the market are containing flame-retardant chemical that are extremely toxic, but in the case of latex mattresses the flame retardant is natural and it is made from untreated wool. This makes the mattress non-toxic and able to meet the safety requirements.

Nevertheless, buying a latex mattress is a matter of personal choice, but after reading all of these characteristic and advantages you may consider purchasing one.
