Is Polyphasic Sleep For You?

Sleep is essential to our lives. Every day we think about how we can improve it and what we can do to become more productive and efficient. A recommendation for a shorter and qualitative sleep is polyphasic sleep.

 

But what is polyphasic sleep? Before answering to this question, one of the first things that you should know about polyphasic sleep is that it’s not the standard sleeping routine of 8 hours. Some studies have shown that humans were big fans of polyphasic sleep in the past, by cutting drastically the time they’ve spent sleeping. While this may seem unhealthy, there some advantages when it comes to polyphasic sleep.

There are different variations of polyphasic sleep that can be seen in some countries around the globe. Fors instance, some of the Mediterranean countries like Spain, Italy and Greece embrace what is called “siesta”, which means that they have around 5-6 hours of sleep per night, accompanied with a nap in the afternoon. In other words, napping is seen as an alternative for polyphasic sleep, especially in this part of the world. It has some certain benefits like improving focus and alertness, not to mention the fact that after a nap you can feel more energized and refreshed.

How To Minimize Sleep Time Through Polyphasic Sleep

If you least consider the idea of trying polyphasic sleep, you should take into consideration some tips that can promise you an effective sleep.

 

You should know first that there are two stages of sleep, one is called REM and the other non-REM. Studies have shown that in most of the cases, people manage to get proper rest when they hit the REM stage; it is considered that most people get around 100 minutes of REM sleep and the rest falls within non-REM sleep.

 

The general idea of polyphasic sleep is that non-REM sleep is not necessary and therefore you don’t need it. It is considered that if you take several short naps you will be able to train your body to reach to REM sleep much quicker and get proper rest without wasting time with the non-REM phase. Of course, for a normal social life this schedule may be quite challenging, but you can least try this experiment to see how it works for you.

 

If you are one of those people who have a busy schedule and if you feel that an 8 hour sleep schedule doesn’t help you a lot if you have many things to accomplish, maybe you should  consider in making an experiment with a polyphasic sleep schedule. Try it and see how it feels after a couple of days; initially you may feel extremely tired but if you train your body properly, you will be able to reach the REM phase in a second and get some restful sleep.
